India Thrash Pakistan by 61 Runs in T20 World Cup Clash as Handshake Snub Continues

India national cricket team delivered a commanding 61-run victory over Pakistan national cricket team in a high-stakes Group A encounter at the T20 World Cup, securing a place in the next round while political tensions again overshadowed the on-field spectacle.

In a match played without the customary pre- and post-game handshakes, India posted 175-7 before bowling Pakistan out for 114 in 18 overs at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Sunday.

No Handshakes, High Drama

The diplomatic frost between the neighboring nations remained evident as Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha and India skipper Suryakumar Yadav avoided a handshake during the coin toss. Players from both sides also declined the traditional post-match greeting.

The gesture extended a freeze that began during last year’s Asian Cup amid ongoing political and military tensions. Pakistan had initially considered boycotting the Colombo fixture before reversing its decision following discussions with the International Cricket Council.

Kishan Powers India to Competitive Total

After being asked to bat first on a sluggish surface known for challenging run chases, India suffered an early setback when opener Abhishek Sharma fell for a duck.

However, Ishan Kishan counterattacked with a blistering 77 off 40 balls, smashing three sixes and 10 boundaries. He shared an 87-run second-wicket partnership with Tilak Varma that shifted the momentum firmly in India’s favor.

Pakistan spinner Saim Ayub impressed with career-best T20 international figures of 3-25, removing Kishan and striking twice in his final over. Useful contributions from Yadav (32) and Shivam Dube (27) propelled India to a formidable total.

Pakistan’s Chase Falters Early

Pakistan’s reply never gathered momentum. All-rounder Hardik Pandya opened with a wicket-maiden, dismissing Sahibzada Farhan and setting the tone.

In the following over, Jasprit Bumrah claimed two quick wickets as Pakistan slumped to 13-3. Spinner Axar Patel then removed Babar Azam for 5, leaving Pakistan reeling at 34-4 inside five overs.

Usman Khan fought back with a 34-ball 44, but his dismissal effectively ended Pakistan’s resistance as India wrapped up the innings with two overs to spare.

Despite the heavy defeat, Pakistan remains in contention for a Super 8 berth, with a crucial match against Namibia still to play.

Rivalry Could Resume in Knockouts

With India advancing and Pakistan still mathematically alive, a rematch in the semifinals or final remains possible. Such a scenario would likely unfold in Sri Lanka, which is co-hosting the tournament alongside India.

The two cricketing giants have not contested a bilateral series in years due to strained relations, elevating ICC tournament meetings to must-watch global events. India now holds a dominant record in T20 internationals between the sides, having won 13 of 17 encounters.

West Indies March On; U.S. Stay in Hunt

Elsewhere in the tournament, the West Indies cricket team secured a Super 8 place with a nine-wicket victory over Nepal in Mumbai. Fast bowler Jason Holder returned 4-27 before Shai Hope struck an unbeaten 61 to seal the chase.

The United States national cricket team boosted its qualification hopes with a 31-run win against Namibia. Skipper Monank Patel scored 52, while Sanjay Krishnamurthi smashed an unbeaten 68 in a record-setting team total of 199-4.
