Sri Lankan authorities have taken custody of an Iranian naval support vessel and evacuated more than 200 crew members after the ship requested assistance while operating near Sri Lankan waters. The development comes amid heightened tensions in the Indian Ocean following the recent sinking of an Iranian warship by a United States submarine.
Over 200 Iranian Sailors Brought Ashore
Sri Lanka’s navy confirmed that 204 sailors from the Iranian naval ship IRIS Bushehr were transported to the Welisara Naval Base near Colombo on Friday. According to navy spokesperson Commander Buddhika Sampath, the sailors underwent immigration checks and medical evaluations upon arrival. Officials reported that none of the crew members required urgent medical treatment.
Approximately 15 crew members remain aboard the vessel alongside Sri Lankan naval personnel to help address a technical malfunction reported by the ship’s crew. Iranian sailors are assisting by translating operational manuals and technical documentation as Sri Lankan teams assess the situation.
Authorities said the ship is expected to be escorted to the eastern port of Trincomalee, where it will remain under Sri Lankan supervision until further notice.
Incident Linked to US Strike on Iranian Warship
The humanitarian response follows a dramatic naval incident earlier in the week. A U.S. submarine sank the Iranian warship IRIS Dena in waters near Sri Lanka on Wednesday. The rare wartime-style naval engagement — unusual since World War II — has intensified regional tensions and highlighted the growing scope of the conflict involving Iran, the United States, and its allies.
The IRIS Dena had recently participated in an international naval exercise hosted by India before heading toward international waters on its return voyage. The event involved naval forces from over 70 countries, including the United States Navy.
Sri Lankan rescue teams recovered 32 surviving sailors from the sinking and retrieved 87 bodies during search and recovery operations.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the vessel carried around 130 crew members, close to the standard crew size for ships of its class. Tehran strongly condemned the attack, describing the sinking as an “atrocity at sea.”
Sri Lanka Emphasizes Neutrality and Humanitarian Duty
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that the government acted after discussions with Iranian authorities and the ship’s captain, following reports that one of the ship’s engines had failed.
Officials said Sri Lanka’s decision to assist the vessel was guided by international maritime law and humanitarian obligations.
“Our responsibility is to respond to distress calls at sea,” the president said, adding that Sri Lanka aims to maintain neutrality while prioritizing the protection of human life.
He also reiterated that Sri Lanka does not intend to take sides in the escalating geopolitical tensions.
Strategic Location Puts Sri Lanka in Delicate Position
The situation highlights Sri Lanka’s sensitive geopolitical role in the Indian Ocean, a key global shipping route increasingly affected by regional conflict.
Former Sri Lankan foreign secretary H.M.G.S. Palihakkara noted that under international conventions such as the Law of the Sea and the Hague Convention, Sri Lanka was obligated to assist vessels in distress.
Analysts say the country’s response demonstrates a careful balance between humanitarian responsibility, legal obligations, and diplomatic neutrality.
Australians Reportedly Onboard the Submarine
Meanwhile, the Australian government confirmed that three Australian personnel were present aboard the submarine involved in the attack as part of a joint military training program under the AUKUS security partnership between the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
Officials clarified that the Australians were participating in training exercises and were not responsible for firing the torpedo that sank the Iranian vessel.
The incident continues to draw international attention as regional powers monitor developments in the Indian Ocean.
