SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The United States Postal Service has unveiled a commemorative stamp series featuring the bald eagle, honoring America’s upcoming 250th anniversary with a design that highlights the nation’s most recognizable symbol at different stages of life.
The special edition stamps, introduced at the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, Minnesota, are now available nationwide and showcase the bald eagle from hatchling to full adulthood.
A Symbol of America Through the Life of an Eagle
The new collection illustrates five distinct stages of the bald eagle’s development, beginning with a young chick and ending with the mature bird known for its white head and powerful wingspan.
United States Postal Service officials said the design reflects the broader story of the United States itself as it approaches its 250th year.
Historians involved in the project noted that the imagery is meant to mirror national growth, comparing the early stages of the eagle’s life to the formative years of the country.
Celebrating a National Icon
The bald eagle has been associated with the United States since the adoption of the Great Seal in 1782 and was officially designated the national bird in 2024. It remains a powerful symbol of freedom, strength, and independence.
Experts say the bird’s dominance in the sky and its role as a top predator make it a fitting emblem for the nation.
Conservation Comeback Story
Once on the brink of disappearing in the United States, the bald eagle has made a dramatic recovery over the past several decades. The population decline in the 20th century was largely linked to the pesticide DDT, which weakened eggshells and caused widespread nesting failures.
Following the 1972 DDT ban and endangered species protections introduced in 1978, eagle populations rebounded significantly. The species was officially removed from the endangered list in 2007, and today there are an estimated hundreds of thousands of bald eagles across the continental U.S., according to wildlife authorities.
Artist Behind the Design
The stamp illustrations were created by wildlife artist and ornithologist David Sibley, who spent nearly a year developing the digital artwork.
Sibley said the challenge was adapting his detailed, life-sized bird illustrations into the much smaller format of postage stamps, ultimately focusing on the eagle’s head to preserve fine detail.
He added that the goal was to encourage people to appreciate the bird not only as a national emblem but also as an important part of the natural ecosystem.

Postal Service officials emphasized that stamps continue to serve as more than postage—they are also a form of cultural storytelling and education.
Each design in the series was carefully developed to reflect both artistic detail and historical meaning, reinforcing the idea that even small everyday items can carry national significance.
