Christian Eriksen ‘conscious’ after another on-field collapse in Denmark match, national team says

ODENSE, Denmark — Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen was reported conscious and in stable condition after collapsing during an international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday, prompting immediate medical intervention and the abandonment of the match.

The 34-year-old midfielder fell in the 65th minute at Nature Energy Park in Odense after clutching his chest during an off-the-ball moment, according to broadcast footage. Players and medical staff rushed to his aid as concern spread across the stadium.

Medical Response and Early Update

The Danish Football Association confirmed shortly after the incident that Eriksen was conscious and receiving medical care. Team physician Morten Boesen later said Eriksen briefly lost consciousness but quickly regained it and was able to walk off the pitch on his own.

Boesen added that Eriksen’s implanted cardiac device appeared to function as intended and that he was taken to hospital for further evaluation to determine the cause of the episode. Officials said he remained in contact with medical staff and was responsive.

Match Abandoned After Emergency

Referees halted the match following discussions with both teams, and the game was officially abandoned in the 79th minute with Denmark leading 2–1. Play did not resume after Eriksen’s collapse.

Spectators initially fell silent as emergency personnel attended to the midfielder, before breaking into chants of support. After the match was called off, players from both Denmark and Ukraine formed a circle at midfield in an emotional show of solidarity, with several visibly distressed.

Echoes of 2021 Collapse

The incident recalled Eriksen’s cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening match at Euro 2020 (played in 2021), when he collapsed on the field against Finland in Copenhagen. He was resuscitated on the pitch and later fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD).

Following that life-threatening episode, Eriksen made a remarkable return to professional football, later playing for Brentford, Manchester United, and German club Wolfsburg.

Clubs and Officials React

Wolfsburg confirmed that Eriksen was taken to Odense University Hospital and said the club is closely monitoring his condition, wishing him a swift recovery. Manchester United also issued a statement expressing support, saying they were encouraged by early medical updates and sending strength to the player and his family.

Denmark’s football authorities said they remain in contact with hospital staff as further examinations are carried out.

Neither Denmark nor Ukraine have qualified for the upcoming World Cup.
