Utah canyon BASE jump kills 2, including daredevil athlete who performed with Madonna

UTAH, USA — A tragic BASE jumping accident in eastern Utah has claimed the lives of two men, including internationally recognized extreme sports athlete Andy Lewis, who gained worldwide attention for his performance alongside pop icon Madonna during the 2012 Super Bowl halftime show.

Authorities in Grand County confirmed that Lewis and another participant, Danny Joe Kregle, died during a tandem BASE jump in a remote canyon area near the Utah-Colorado border on Sunday.

Fatal Tandem BASE Jump Under Investigation

Emergency crews responded to reports of a serious incident at Mineral Bottom, a rugged desert location popular among adventure sports enthusiasts. Officials said the two men were involved in a tandem BASE jump, a high-risk activity in which two individuals are connected by a harness system and rely on a single parachute during descent.

Investigators have not yet released details regarding the exact cause of the accident, and the circumstances surrounding the fatal jump remain under review.

Andy Lewis Remembered as a Pioneer of Extreme Sports

Lewis was widely respected in the adventure sports community for his achievements in BASE jumping, slacklining, and tricklining. Friends and fellow athletes described him as an exceptionally talented performer who constantly pushed the limits of what was possible in extreme sports.

According to colleagues, Lewis co-owned an aerial arts company in Moab and operated a business that introduced customers to tandem BASE jumping experiences in Utah’s canyon landscapes.

Fellow BASE jumping instructor John McEvoy said Lewis possessed remarkable athletic ability developed over years of training but was also known for taking bold risks that set him apart from many athletes in the sport.

From Extreme Athlete to Super Bowl Performer

Lewis became a household name in 2012 when he appeared during Madonna’s Super Bowl halftime performance. Showcasing his slacklining skills on one of the world’s biggest stages, he performed acrobatic tricks while balancing on a narrow line as millions watched worldwide.

The appearance transformed him from a niche sports competitor into a globally recognized athlete and entertainer.

Beyond the Super Bowl, Lewis built an impressive résumé that included multiple world championships in competitive slacklining and several high-profile record-setting stunts.

Among his notable achievements were:

  • Four consecutive world slacklining titles from 2008 to 2011.
  • A Guinness World Record for slackline surfing above a waterfall in China.
  • A daring slackline walk suspended between two hot air balloons more than 4,000 feet above the Nevada desert.

Second Victim Remembered by Family

The second victim, Danny Joe Kregle, was remembered by family members as a successful businessman, devoted father, and grandfather.

Relatives described him as someone who loved making people laugh and cherished spending time with his family. They said one of his favorite activities was performing magic tricks with his granddaughter.

BASE Jumping Remains One of the World’s Riskiest Sports

BASE jumping is considered significantly more dangerous than traditional skydiving because participants leap from fixed structures such as cliffs, bridges, towers, or buildings while deploying parachutes at much lower altitudes.

Safety experts note that participants have far less time to react in emergencies compared to conventional skydiving.

Research has indicated that the risk of serious injury or death in BASE jumping is several times higher than in standard parachuting activities. The sport has witnessed hundreds of fatalities worldwide over the past four decades.

Tandem BASE jumping remains particularly controversial within the adventure sports community because it places an inexperienced participant under the control of a single expert jumper. Supporters argue it allows newcomers to experience an extraordinary activity, while critics believe it introduces additional safety concerns.

Community Mourns Loss

News of Lewis’s death has sent shockwaves through the global extreme sports community, where he was regarded as one of the sport’s most recognizable and influential figures.

Tributes from fellow athletes, friends, and adventure enthusiasts have poured in across social media, honoring his contributions to slacklining, BASE jumping, and aerial sports.

As authorities continue investigating the accident, both Lewis and Kregle are being remembered for lives marked by adventure, passion, and a willingness to embrace extraordinary challenges.
