Southern China is facing widespread devastation after the remnants of Tropical Storm Maysak unleashed record-breaking rainfall across the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, causing deadly floods, large-scale evacuations, and severe infrastructure damage.
Authorities confirmed that at least six people have died and 11 others remain missing as rescue operations continue in several flood-hit communities. More than 130,000 residents have been evacuated from affected areas as emergency teams work to reach people stranded by rising floodwaters.
Thousands Displaced by Record Rainfall
Days of intense rainfall have submerged towns and villages across Guangxi, leaving homes, roads, and public infrastructure underwater.
According to regional officials, exceptionally heavy rain has fallen since the weekend, with some locations recording more than 900 millimeters (35 inches) of precipitation. Weather experts warned that additional rainfall could worsen flooding and complicate rescue efforts.
Emergency responders have been deployed throughout the region to evacuate residents trapped by rapidly rising water levels.
Families Await Rescue
Many communities remain isolated as floodwaters continue to block access routes.
One resident, Lu Xiaofei, said her brother’s family—including his wife, infant child, parents, and grandfather—has been stranded inside their home in Qintang district after floodwaters rose above the first floor.
The family has reportedly taken shelter on the upper level of the house while coping with power outages, disrupted water supplies, and dwindling drinking water. Lu said nearby residents are facing similar conditions as they wait for emergency assistance.
Social media platforms have also been flooded with appeals for help, with residents sharing videos showing submerged neighborhoods and requesting urgent rescue and relief supplies.
Flooding Creates Additional Safety Risks
The disaster has created new public safety concerns beyond the flooding itself.
Local media reported that floodwaters washed snakes out of breeding facilities in Hengzhou City, allowing them to spread into nearby residential areas. Several residents were reportedly bitten while attempting to protect their homes during the flooding.
Authorities continue monitoring the situation as emergency services respond to multiple hazards across the affected region.
Transportation Disrupted
Flood damage has forced the suspension of several railway services in Guangxi as officials prioritize passenger safety and inspect transportation infrastructure.
Emergency management teams remain on high alert as forecasts indicate that heavy rainfall is expected to continue across parts of southern China.
Another Powerful Storm Approaching
While recovery efforts are underway, meteorologists are closely tracking Super Typhoon Bavi, which is forecast to impact southeastern China later this week.
Officials are urging residents in potentially affected areas to monitor weather updates and prepare for possible severe weather conditions.
