A massive fire swept through a residential neighborhood in southern Norway, destroying more than 100 homes and forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate as emergency crews continued battling the blaze into Saturday.
The fire broke out Friday afternoon in a townhouse in the city of Drammen, located about 34 kilometers (21 miles) southwest of Oslo. Authorities said the flames spread rapidly through nearby residential areas before reaching surrounding forested land.
Firefighters Continue Emergency Response
According to Norwegian police, the blaze began at approximately 3:30 p.m. local time. Strong flames quickly engulfed multiple buildings, making firefighting efforts challenging.
Emergency responders worked through the night to contain the fire, with operations continuing Saturday morning to prevent further spread.
Hundreds Evacuated
Authorities ordered large-scale evacuations as the fire expanded across the neighborhood.
Norway’s public broadcaster NRK reported that hundreds of displaced residents were taken to an emergency evacuation center where temporary shelter and assistance were provided.
