U.S. President Donald Trump has named Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to Greenland, reviving a controversial diplomatic push that underscores Washington’s strategic interest in the Arctic region.
The announcement was made Sunday via Trump’s Truth Social platform, where the president said Landry would work to advance U.S. national security interests and strengthen cooperation with allies. Trump described Greenland as strategically vital, citing its geopolitical importance and relevance to global security.
“Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our national security and will strongly advance America’s interests,” Trump wrote.
Role and Reaction
Governor Landry confirmed the appointment on social media, describing the role as a volunteer position and stressing that it would not interfere with his responsibilities as Louisiana’s governor. He thanked Trump for the opportunity and reiterated his support for closer ties between the United States and Greenland.
Landry has previously expressed strong backing for Trump’s long-standing view that Greenland should become part of the United States, calling the idea beneficial for both sides. Trump has repeatedly raised the prospect over the years, pointing to Greenland’s strategic location in the Arctic and its untapped natural resources.
Greenland and Denmark Push Back
Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has consistently rejected any suggestion of becoming part of the United States. Danish and Greenlandic leaders have reaffirmed that the island is not for sale and that its future will be decided by its people.
