China has conducted its most expansive military exercises around Taiwan to date, firing rockets into surrounding waters and deploying advanced naval and air assets in drills that simulate a full-scale blockade of the self-governed island. According to China’s Eastern Theatre Command, the drills involved roughly 10 hours of live-fire activity across multiple zones encircling Taiwan, including areas to the island’s north and south. Naval vessels, bomber aircraft, and amphibious assault ships participated in coordinated operations designed to rehearse maritime strikes, air defense, and anti-submarine warfare.
Chinese authorities described the exercise—named Justice Mission 2025—as a test of the military’s ability to impose “integrated containment and control” over Taiwan. The drills began shortly after the United States announced a record arms package for Taipei, a move Beijing has repeatedly condemned as interference in what it calls its internal affairs.
Taiwan on Alert as Drills Intensify
Taiwan’s defense officials confirmed that live-fire activity took place in nearby waters on Tuesday morning, with debris detected inside the island’s contiguous zone, which extends 24 nautical miles from its coastline. While authorities said they were closely monitoring developments, there was no immediate confirmation that missiles were fired directly over the island.
A senior Taiwanese security official said the government is particularly focused on whether China might repeat tactics used during previous exercises, including launching missiles across Taiwan’s airspace. At sea, Taiwanese coast guard officials said multiple Chinese coast guard vessels were operating near Taiwan’s contiguous zone, leading to close-range standoffs. Taiwanese ships responded by shadowing the Chinese vessels and using maneuvering tactics to prevent further encroachment.
New Hardware and Messaging from Beijing
Chinese state media highlighted the debut of the Type 075 amphibious assault ship during the exercises, underscoring Beijing’s growing amphibious capabilities. Military analysts say the vessel is designed to deploy helicopters, landing craft, and armored vehicles, enhancing China’s ability to conduct large-scale coastal operations.
The drills were accompanied by a wave of official messaging and visual propaganda emphasizing China’s territorial claims over Taiwan. State outlets also released videos and graphics portraying advanced technologies—such as drones and robotic systems—being used in hypothetical combat scenarios.
