As winter storms blanket parts of the United States in fresh snow, the temptation to scoop up a handful of the pristine flakes or make homemade snow treats grows. Snow cream—made by mixing fresh snow with sweetened condensed milk, sugar, and vanilla—has long been a seasonal favorite, but experts caution that not all snow is safe to eat.

Snow can accumulate pollutants as it falls, especially near industrial areas, highways, or areas treated with salt and chemicals. Steven Fassnacht, a professor of snow hydrology at Colorado State University, notes that snowflakes, due to their larger surface area and slower descent, often collect more impurities than raindrops.

To safely enjoy snow treats:

  • Only use fresh, white snow that has not touched the ground or been plowed.
  • Avoid yellow or discolored snow, which may be contaminated.
  • Collect snow later in a storm rather than the initial snowfall, which often contains higher levels of airborne particles.

Snow as a Hydration Source
While eating small amounts of snow is generally safe for enjoyment, experts warn against relying on it for hydration in survival situations. Consuming snow can lower core body temperature, increase the risk of hypothermia, and provide minimal hydration because the body expends energy to melt it. Outdoor enthusiasts in remote areas are advised to melt and boil snow before drinking.
