A commercial vessel anchored near the eastern coastline of the United Arab Emirates was reportedly seized on Thursday and is believed to be moving toward Iranian territorial waters, according to British maritime authorities.
The incident took place close to the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route for oil and gas exports. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed it had received reports that unauthorized individuals boarded and took control of the ship while it was anchored approximately 38 nautical miles northeast of Fujairah.
Officials have not yet identified the vessel involved, and no group has claimed responsibility for the operation. UKMTO stated that investigations are ongoing as maritime security agencies continue monitoring the situation.
The latest development comes at a time of heightened instability across the Middle East. Ongoing tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States have already disrupted international trade routes and increased concerns about energy security and global economic stability.
The seizure also coincided with high-level diplomatic talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. International analysts expect discussions between the two leaders to include the worsening regional conflict and its impact on global markets, particularly energy supplies passing through the Gulf region.
Meanwhile, controversy also emerged after reports surfaced claiming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a quiet visit to the UAE during the ongoing regional conflict. Emirati officials quickly denied those reports, dismissing claims of any undisclosed diplomatic meeting.
The UAE and Israel normalized diplomatic ties in 2020 under the Abraham Accords, a move that drew criticism from Iran. Tehran has repeatedly alleged that Israel maintains intelligence and security operations within Gulf states, including the UAE.
Fujairah remains one of the UAE’s most important maritime hubs and serves as a major oil export terminal outside the Persian Gulf. Due to its strategic location near the Strait of Hormuz, the port has frequently been viewed as vulnerable during periods of regional conflict.
