Aaron Rai runs away with the PGA Championship, first English-born winner in more than a century

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pennsylvania — England’s Aaron Rai delivered the performance of his career on Sunday, storming through the final round of the PGA Championship to secure his first major title and make golfing history at Aronimink Golf Club.

The 31-year-old English golfer produced a sensational back-nine charge to finish at 9-under-par 271, capturing the Wanamaker Trophy by three shots and becoming the first English-born player in more than 100 years to win the PGA Championship.

Rai entered the final round among a crowded field of contenders that included some of golf’s biggest stars, such as Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Xander Schauffele. However, as pressure mounted across the course, Rai separated himself with a composed and fearless finish.

Brilliant Back Nine Seals Major Breakthrough

Trailing by three shots around the turn, Rai ignited his charge with an eagle and followed it with a series of clutch birdies over the closing holes. His momentum peaked on the 17th green when he drained a remarkable 70-foot birdie putt, sending fans into celebration and effectively sealing the championship.

Rai closed with a flawless 5-under 65, one of the best final rounds seen in recent major championship history.

The victory marks the biggest achievement of Rai’s professional career, adding a major championship to his growing list of international wins.

“To be in this position is beyond anything I imagined,” Rai said after lifting the trophy.

Golf’s Biggest Names Fall Short

Several elite players remained in contention throughout the day, but mistakes on the demanding Aronimink layout proved costly.

Jon Rahm finished tied for second after posting a solid 68, recording his best major result since joining LIV Golf in 2023. American golfer Alex Smalley also shared second place after recovering from an early double bogey.

Rory McIlroy briefly threatened the leaderboard but struggled on key holes during the closing stretch. Defending champion Scottie Scheffler was unable to mount a serious comeback and ended the tournament outside the top 10.

Justin Thomas set the clubhouse target after an impressive 65 earlier in the day, but Rai’s late surge ultimately ended his hopes.

Historic Achievement for English Golf

Rai’s triumph ends a century-long wait for an English-born PGA Championship winner, a feat last accomplished by Jim Barnes in 1919.

Known on tour for his humility and disciplined work ethic, Rai has earned widespread respect among fellow professionals. His calm demeanor and unique traditions — including using iron headcovers as a tribute to his early golfing journey — have made him one of the sport’s most admired figures.

Players across the tour praised Rai following the victory, with many highlighting both his talent and sportsmanship.

Career-Changing Victory

The PGA Championship win secures Rai a lifetime invitation to future PGA Championships along with exemptions into golf’s biggest tournaments, including the Masters, U.S. Open, and The Open Championship for the coming years.

The win also cements his status among golf’s elite and represents a breakthrough moment after years of steady progress on both the PGA Tour and European circuit.

Rai said the victory reflected years of dedication and perseverance.

“Golf teaches patience, humility, and hard work,” he said. “Nothing comes easy in this game.”

At Aronimink, however, Rai made greatness look effortless.
