TOLEDO, Ohio — Authorities are searching for suspects after a weekend shooting near a popular street festival in Toledo left 12 people injured and forced crowds to flee a historic neighborhood, police said Sunday.
The shooting erupted Saturday near the Old West End Festival, an annual summer event held in an area known for its Victorian homes, live music, food vendors, and community gatherings. Officials say the incident unfolded in a crowded public space, sending festivalgoers scrambling for safety.
Victims Stable as Investigation Continues
According to the Toledo Police Department, all 12 victims—ranging in age from teenagers to people in their 60s—are in stable condition. Authorities have not made any arrests and have not publicly identified any suspects.
Investigators believe multiple shooters may have been involved. Deputy Police Chief Joe Heffernan said early findings suggest at least two individuals opened fire, possibly targeting each other during the incident.
Police have urged witnesses and attendees to provide photos, videos, or any information that could help identify those responsible.
Chaos at a Major Community Event
The gunfire broke out during peak attendance at the two-day festival, which draws large crowds to Toledo’s Old West End district in northwest Ohio, near Lake Erie. Videos shared on social media showed people running for cover as shots rang out, while emergency crews rushed in to treat the wounded.
First responders faced additional challenges reaching victims due to heavy crowds, closed roads, and traffic congestion caused by festival evacuation efforts. Officials said all injured individuals were transported to hospitals within an hour.
Officials Condemn Violence
Local authorities condemned the shooting, calling it a major disruption to one of the city’s most cherished cultural events. Toledo Safety Director George Kral described the festival as a community highlight that was overshadowed by violence.
Lucas County Prosecutor Julia Bates also vowed a strong response, saying law enforcement is committed to bringing those responsible to justice and emphasizing support for victims and their families.
Festival organizers announced the cancellation of the remainder of the event, stating it would be inappropriate to continue under the circumstances.
Ongoing Search for Suspects
Police said investigative efforts are ongoing, with multiple leads being pursued. Officials are continuing to review surveillance footage and witness accounts in hopes of identifying the shooters.
Authorities have not ruled out additional arrests as the investigation develops.
The shooting is part of a broader wave of gun violence incidents reported across the United States over the weekend.
