6 people hurt in stabbings at New York’s Penn Station with a suspect in custody, authorities says

NEW YORK — Six people were injured in a stabbing attack inside New York’s Penn Station on Sunday evening, prompting a swift police response at one of the busiest transportation hubs in the United States, authorities said.

A suspect was taken into custody shortly after the incident, which occurred around 7 p.m. inside the sprawling rail complex located beneath Madison Square Garden. The station serves multiple transit systems, including Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road, NJ Transit, and New York City subway lines, and handles hundreds of thousands of passengers daily.

Victims Hospitalized After Attack

Emergency responders reported varying levels of injuries among the victims. According to the New York City Fire Department, one person sustained serious injuries, two suffered moderate wounds, and two others had minor injuries. All five were transported to Bellevue Hospital for treatment.

A sixth injured individual was taken to another hospital, though their condition has not yet been disclosed.

Authorities have not released details about the suspect or a possible motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Heightened Concern Ahead of Major Sports Event

The stabbing occurred less than 24 hours before a major influx of visitors is expected in the area for Game 3 of the NBA Finals at nearby Madison Square Garden, raising additional concerns about security in the densely populated transit corridor.

Penn Station, located in midtown Manhattan, is considered one of the busiest rail hubs in North America and a critical entry point for commuters and travelers in and out of New York City.

Investigation Underway

Law enforcement officials are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack. Security has been heightened in and around the station as authorities assess potential risks and review surveillance footage.

No further details have been released about whether the victims and suspect were known to each other or if the attack was random.

The investigation is ongoing.
