US is interested in a Polish offer for a permanent US military base, Polish official says

Polish officials say the United States has shown interest in a proposal to establish a permanent American military base in Poland, marking a potential shift in NATO’s force posture along its eastern flank.

The comments come as Warsaw moves forward with formal steps to invite a long-term U.S. base, signaling Poland’s push to deepen its strategic defense partnership with Washington amid ongoing security concerns in Europe.

Poland Frames Proposal as Strategic Invitation

Poland’s deputy defense minister Cezary Tomczyk said the initiative reflects ongoing discussions between both countries and described the plan as a formal offer from Warsaw.

He said the proposal would involve shared financing and that U.S. officials have indicated interest in evaluating the idea, although no final decision has been made.

Tomczyk emphasized that talks remain in a preliminary phase, with both sides continuing diplomatic and military-level consultations.

U.S. Response Remains Noncommittal

Officials from the U.S. Department of Defense have not confirmed any decision regarding a permanent base, stating only that there is “nothing new to announce” at this stage.

The United States currently maintains approximately 10,000 troops in Poland, most of whom are deployed on a rotational basis as part of NATO’s broader deterrence strategy in Eastern Europe.

Poland Seeks Stronger and Permanent Presence

Polish authorities have been advocating for a shift from rotational deployments to a permanent U.S. military presence, arguing it would strengthen regional security and enhance NATO’s defensive posture near Russia’s western border.

Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz has previously said that while Poland is prepared to host expanded U.S. forces, the final decision rests with Washington.

NATO Strategy and European Security Context

The proposal comes as NATO continues to reassess its force distribution across Europe, particularly in response to heightened security concerns following tensions in Eastern Europe.

Polish officials argue that a permanent base would reinforce deterrence and improve coordination between allied forces operating in the region.

At the same time, U.S. military planners are reportedly reviewing global troop deployments, including adjustments to force levels across Europe.

Uncertain Path Forward

While both sides acknowledge ongoing dialogue, no formal agreement has been reached, and timelines remain unclear. Polish officials describe the discussions as part of a broader effort to strengthen long-term defense cooperation with the United States.

For now, the proposal remains under consideration, with any final decision dependent on approval from U.S. leadership.
