Two men who recently discovered through DNA testing that they were mistakenly sent home with the wrong families nearly four decades ago have filed a lawsuit against a North Dakota hospital, alleging negligence that permanently changed the course of their lives.
The legal action, filed in state court, claims that Unity Medical Center in Grafton mistakenly switched the newborns shortly after their births on January 26, 1988. The men, Kyle Bylin and Jeremy Morrison, say the error deprived both families of decades of shared memories and life experiences.
DNA Test Uncovers Life-Changing Truth
The remarkable discovery began when Kyle Bylin took an at-home DNA test as part of a Christmas gift exchange. Instead of connecting with expected relatives, the results linked him to an unknown biological aunt through a genealogy platform.
Further DNA testing confirmed that Bylin and Morrison were biologically connected to each other’s families. According to the lawsuit, they were the only two babies born at the hospital on the same day, strongly suggesting they were accidentally switched before leaving the medical center.
The revelation left both men and their families stunned.
Families Say They Lost Nearly Four Decades Together
Although both men say they were raised in loving homes, they believe they were deprived of the opportunity to grow up with their biological parents and siblings.
Kyle Bylin’s adoptive mother, Evelyn Newton, described the discovery as heartbreaking, saying the family lost countless milestones that can never be recovered, including childhood memories, graduations, weddings, and other important life events.
Despite the emotional impact, both men emphasize that the parents who raised them will always remain their family.

Unity Medical Center acknowledged the families’ discovery but stated there is no evidence proving hospital staff caused the switch.
