The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy took an emotional turn on Wednesday as jurors listened to a distressing 911 call made by her former husband, Patrick Clancy, after he returned home and discovered their three children had been fatally strangled.
The courtroom fell silent as the recording captured Patrick Clancy’s frantic efforts to assess the situation after finding Lindsay Clancy injured outside their home following an apparent jump from a second-story window. Moments later, the call became increasingly emotional as he searched the house and discovered the children in the basement.
Prosecutors allege that Lindsay Clancy intentionally killed the couple’s three children—Dawson, 3, Cora, 5, and Callan, 8 months old—in January 2023. The defense, however, argues that she was experiencing severe postpartum psychosis, a rare psychiatric condition that can occur after childbirth and significantly impair judgment and perception of reality.
During his testimony, Patrick Clancy described the events leading up to the tragedy. He told jurors that his wife had asked him to leave the house briefly to pick up takeout food and medication from a nearby pharmacy. Surveillance footage presented in court showed him speaking with Lindsay by phone during the errand, with nothing in the conversation indicating an emergency.
Upon returning home, Patrick testified that the unusually quiet atmosphere immediately concerned him. After searching several rooms, he discovered blood in the master bedroom and an open window. He then found Lindsay Clancy outside the home with serious injuries. According to his testimony, she told him she had attempted to take her own life and indicated that the children were in the basement.
Patrick later found all three children unresponsive. Court testimony stated they had been strangled using exercise bands.
The emotional 911 recording prompted visible reactions inside the courtroom, with several family members and attendees becoming tearful as it was played for the jury.
Throughout the trial, prosecutors have maintained that Lindsay Clancy was fully aware of her actions and should be held criminally responsible for the deaths. Defense attorneys, however, contend that her mental health had deteriorated significantly in the months before the incident.
According to the defense, Lindsay Clancy had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and was prescribed multiple psychiatric medications following the birth of her youngest child. Her legal team argues that medication changes, combined with severe postpartum psychiatric illness, contributed to a psychotic episode at the time of the killings.
Patrick Clancy also testified that his wife had sought treatment from mental health professionals, kept detailed notes documenting her medications and mood, and frequently recorded experiencing what she described as “horrible thoughts.” He said she had attended numerous psychiatric appointments and had recently been discharged from a psychiatric hospital before the tragedy.
Defense attorneys questioned Patrick about the medical care Lindsay received, suggesting that her treatment may not have adequately addressed the severity of her condition. They also highlighted adjustments made to her psychiatric medications in the weeks before the incident.
The outcome of the trial is expected to depend largely on whether jurors conclude that Lindsay Clancy was legally responsible for her actions or whether her mental condition prevented her from understanding the nature and consequences of what occurred.
If convicted of murder, she could face a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Alternatively, if the jury determines she lacked criminal responsibility due to mental illness, she could be committed to a state psychiatric facility instead of serving a prison sentence.
Court proceedings are expected to continue with additional testimony from medical experts and mental health professionals who will address Lindsay Clancy’s psychiatric condition and treatment history.
