US New Push for Ukraine Peace Deal as U.S. and Kyiv Revise Proposal in Geneva

In a renewed diplomatic effort, U.S. and Ukrainian officials have agreed on a “refined peace framework” aimed at narrowing key differences over how to end the ongoing war in Ukraine. The development follows high-level talks held in Geneva on Sunday, where both sides sought to adjust a previous U.S. proposal that Kyiv and several European allies feared leaned too far toward Moscow’s interests.

Cautious Optimism After Geneva Discussions

According to a joint statement released on Monday, Washington and Kyiv confirmed that discussions had produced a more balanced draft framework. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said his delegation had returned to Kyiv to brief him on the outcomes, emphasizing that the revised plan now includes “correct points” aligned with Ukraine’s core interests.

U.S. President Donald Trump signaled guarded optimism, noting on Truth Social that “something good just may be happening,” though he cautioned that any true progress would require verification. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt later confirmed that a few disagreements remain but expressed confidence that negotiators could resolve them.

Controversial U.S. Plan Sparks European Pushback

The initial 28-point U.S. proposal drew sharp reactions across Europe after reports suggested it required Ukraine to give up additional territory, limit military capabilities, and forgo future NATO membership—conditions Kyiv has repeatedly rejected.

European allies responded quickly with their own counter-proposal. Their plan recommends freezing the conflict along current front lines, postponing territorial discussions, and offering Ukraine a U.S.-backed security guarantee similar to NATO protection. Moscow dismissed this European version outright, calling it “unconstructive.”

Pressure Mounts on Kyiv Amid Domestic Strains

The diplomatic pressure comes at a challenging moment for President Zelenskiy, who is facing domestic turbulence following a corruption scandal and renewed Russian advances on the battlefield. Public sentiment in Ukraine remains firmly against any agreement perceived as compromising national sovereignty.

“Trump’s plan feels like a capitulation,” said Kyiv resident Anzhelika Yurkevych. “The Ukrainian people will not accept a deal that sells out our future.”

Sensitive Issues Still Unresolved

Despite the progress reported in Geneva, no public details have emerged on how the refined plan would address critical issues such as long-term security guarantees or funding Ukraine’s massive reconstruction needs. Zelenskiy emphasized that negotiations will continue, noting that Ukraine remains committed to finding “compromises that strengthen, not weaken us.”

Sources indicate that Zelenskiy may travel to the United States this week to discuss unresolved points directly with President Trump.

War Continues on the Ground

Even as diplomatic efforts intensify, fighting shows no signs of slowing. On Sunday, a major drone strike on Kharkiv killed four people, with first responders describing the destruction as “devastating.” Meanwhile, Russia reported shooting down ten Ukrainian drones targeting Moscow, a day after a rare Ukrainian attack caused power outages near the Russian capital.

EU Leaders Call for Balanced Peace Process

On the sidelines of an EU-African Union summit in Luanda, European leaders reiterated that any peace deal must protect Ukraine’s sovereignty and Europe’s security. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described the Geneva outcome as an “interim result,” noting that while progress has been made, “peace in Ukraine won’t happen overnight.”

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk cautioned that Europe must ensure the process strengthens, not weakens, Ukraine: “No one wants to discourage the United States from remaining fully engaged.”
