India Hosts Global AI Summit with Leaders, Tech CEOs, and a Focus on the Global South

India has kicked off a high-profile artificial intelligence summit, convening heads of state, senior officials, and top technology executives in New Delhi for a five-day forum highlighting AI’s growing global influence.

The India AI Impact Summit is the first of its kind in the Global South, aiming to discuss opportunities and challenges posed by AI, a technology largely developed and dominated by companies in wealthy nations. Delegates will explore AI’s impact on economies, labor markets, ethics, and security, alongside its applications in healthcare, defense, climate modeling, and generative creative tools.

India Positions Itself as a Rising AI Power

India, the world’s most populous country and one of its fastest-growing digital markets, sees the summit as a platform to position itself as a bridge between advanced economies and the Global South. Officials highlighted India’s experience in scaling digital infrastructure—such as digital identity programs and payment platforms—as a model for deploying AI at low cost and high efficiency.

“The goal is clear: AI should be used for shaping humanity, inclusive growth, and a sustainable future,” said Ashwini Vaishnaw, India’s Minister for Electronics and Information Technology.

Attendance Highlights

The summit will host 20 heads of state, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to address a session on Thursday. Leading tech figures, including Google CEO Sundar Pichai, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Microsoft President Brad Smith, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, and AMI Labs Executive Chairman Yann LeCun, are also attending.

Indian executives hope the gathering will showcase the nation’s growing role in economic resilience, national capability development, and large-scale AI implementation. “AI has a critical role to play in strengthening systems across energy, manufacturing, and public infrastructure,” said Sumant Sinha, CEO of clean energy firm ReNew.

Summit Goals and AI Governance

The event is expected to conclude with a non-binding declaration on AI development priorities, following the pattern of previous summits. Earlier editions, including the Paris AI Action Summit, focused on balancing innovation with safety while debating the risks of overregulation.

Ahead of the New Delhi summit, a panel of AI experts released the second annual safety report on the potential dangers of advanced AI, covering misuse, malfunctions, and systemic risks. Yoshua Bengio, one of the “Godfathers of AI,” emphasized the importance of an independent scientific evaluation of emerging risks to build international consensus.

Addressing Workforce Concerns

AI’s impact on employment remains a key topic in India. Experts underscore reskilling programs to mitigate disruptions and prepare workers for emerging roles in the AI-driven economy. “As AI becomes mainstream, new job opportunities will continue to emerge alongside reskilling initiatives,” said Sangeeta Gupta, senior vice president at Nasscom, India’s technology industry association.

For students like 22-year-old Anirudh Singh of Delhi University, AI is already easing academic tasks. “AI reduces the tedious work students usually face, making internships and projects more manageable,” Singh said.

The India AI Impact Summit signals New Delhi’s intent to play a strategic role in shaping the global AI agenda while leveraging its domestic capabilities to support inclusive growth across the Global South.
