Dubai, United Arab Emirates — The United Arab Emirates, long promoted as a secure, tax-free refuge in a volatile region, faced an unprecedented security crisis after Iranian missile and drone strikes targeted key sites across the country.
The attacks, launched amid escalating tensions following large-scale U.S. and Israeli military action against Iran, disrupted air travel, damaged prominent landmarks, and raised fresh concerns about regional stability. Authorities confirmed one fatality and seven injuries at the airport in Abu Dhabi, while multiple fires broke out in Dubai after falling debris from intercepted missiles.
Iconic Landmarks Caught in the Crossfire
Although Emirati officials stated that air defense systems successfully intercepted incoming projectiles, debris ignited blazes near some of Dubai’s most recognizable destinations. Social media footage showed flames near the Fairmont The Palm on Palm Jumeirah, while smoke was seen close to the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab and rising near the base of Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower.

The Ministry of Defense said it intercepted 165 ballistic missiles, two cruise missiles, and more than 540 drones over a 48-hour period.

Travelers reported hearing repeated blasts throughout the night. Kristy Ellmer, visiting from New Hampshire, said the sounds were deeply unsettling despite assurances of safety. Louise Herrle, an American tourist whose return flight was canceled, said the sudden escalation may deter her from visiting the region again.
Nearly 90% of the UAE’s estimated 11 million residents are foreign nationals, many drawn by its business-friendly policies, luxury real estate, and low-tax environment. The country’s leadership has long positioned Dubai as a sanctuary of stability amid regional unrest — a reputation now facing a serious test.
