Beirut — The leader of Hezbollah has called on Lebanon’s government to withdraw from planned direct negotiations with Israel, as escalating violence in southern Lebanon underscores the fragility of diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing conflict.
In a televised address, Hezbollah chief Naim Kassem urged officials to cancel the rare talks scheduled in Washington, dismissing them as ineffective and politically damaging. The meeting, set to involve Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors, would mark the first direct engagement between the two sides in decades.
Diplomacy at Odds with Battlefield Reality
Kassem’s remarks come amid continued hostilities between Hezbollah and Israeli forces, which have intensified since early March. The latest conflict erupted after Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, a key ally of the group.
Lebanon’s government has expressed willingness to pursue negotiations, hoping to secure a ceasefire similar to recent diplomatic efforts involving the United States and Iran. However, key differences remain. Lebanese officials prioritize halting hostilities, while Israel has framed the talks around long-term security concerns, including Hezbollah’s disarmament.
Kassem criticized the proposed negotiations, arguing they offer concessions without guarantees and fail to address ongoing military operations. He instead called for a return to indirect diplomacy mediated by international actors, as seen during previous ceasefire agreements.
Intensifying Clashes in Bint Jbeil
While political divisions deepen, fierce fighting continues on the ground — particularly in the strategic southern town of Bint Jbeil, located near the Israeli border. Israeli forces have reportedly encircled parts of the town, prompting heavy المقاومة from Hezbollah fighters using rockets, artillery, and drones.
The area has long held military significance due to its elevated terrain overlooking the border region. Recent days have seen some of the most intense clashes, with both sides reporting casualties and ongoing engagements.

The conflict has taken a heavy toll on civilians. According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, more than 2,000 people have been killed since the fighting began, including women, children, and medical personnel. Millions have been displaced as airstrikes and ground operations spread across the country.
In Beirut, residents are still recovering from recent Israeli strikes described as among the deadliest since the war reignited. Meanwhile, funerals across the country highlight the human cost of the conflict, including the burial of a Lebanese Red Cross paramedic killed أثناء a rescue mission.
Humanitarian organizations have raised alarm over the safety of aid workers. The International Committee of the Red Cross has called for greater protection, emphasizing that medical teams must be allowed to operate without fear of attack.

Despite international pressure to de-escalate, both military operations and political disagreements continue to hinder progress toward peace. Israel has reduced strikes in some areas while intensifying its campaign in the south, signaling a shift toward securing strategic territory.
