BAKU, Azerbaijan — Azerbaijan has accused neighboring Iran of launching a drone attack on its territory, injuring civilians and raising fears of wider regional tensions. Officials in Baku warned that the incident would not go unanswered.
According to Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry, several drones targeted the autonomous exclave of Nakhchivan on Thursday. One drone reportedly crashed near the Nakhchivan International Airport, while another struck close to a school building in the Julfa district. Authorities said the attack damaged civilian infrastructure and left four people injured.
Azerbaijan Condemns Attack
President Ilham Aliyev described the incident as an act of aggression and instructed the country’s military to prepare potential retaliatory measures. Speaking during a meeting of Azerbaijan’s Security Council, he demanded an official explanation and apology from Tehran.
“Azerbaijan will not tolerate acts of terror or aggression against its territory,” Aliyev said, adding that those responsible must be held accountable.
In response to the incident, Azerbaijan temporarily halted truck traffic along its roughly 700-kilometer border with Iran and summoned the Iranian ambassador to lodge a formal protest.
Iran Rejects Responsibility
Iran’s General Staff of the Armed Forces denied any involvement in the attack. Iranian officials stated that their military had not launched drones toward Azerbaijani territory.
The denial comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, where regional conflicts have increasingly involved drone and missile strikes. Iran has repeatedly rejected accusations that it deliberately targets civilian sites.
Details of the Drone Incident
Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry reported that four drones were launched toward the Nakhchivan region. One was intercepted by Azerbaijani forces, while the others landed near civilian areas.
Local authorities confirmed that the attack caused damage to an airport facility and buildings near a school that was in session at the time. Emergency services responded quickly, and the injured civilians were taken for medical treatment.
Officials have not yet confirmed whether the drones intentionally targeted those locations or if the damage resulted from malfunction or misdirection.
Strategic Importance of Nakhchivan
Nakhchivan is an Azerbaijani exclave separated from the rest of the country by a narrow strip of Armenian territory. The region borders Turkey and Iran and represents roughly six percent of Azerbaijan’s land area.
Because of its geography, Nakhchivan holds significant strategic value for regional trade and transportation routes.
Regional Reactions
Turkey quickly voiced support for Azerbaijan following the accusations. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a phone conversation with President Aliyev and condemned the reported attack.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry also urged all parties to avoid actions that could expand regional conflicts into neighboring countries.
Complex Azerbaijan–Iran Relations
Relations between Azerbaijan and Iran have been complicated in recent years. Baku has strengthened political, economic, and military ties with Israel and the United States—moves that have raised concerns in Tehran.
Iran has also accused Azerbaijan of allowing Israeli intelligence activities on its territory, an allegation that Baku has consistently denied. Azerbaijani leaders have repeatedly stated that their country will not allow its territory to be used to launch attacks on neighboring states.
Despite those tensions, Azerbaijan recently expressed condolences to Iran following the death of its supreme leader and has publicly called for de-escalation in regional conflicts.
Rising Regional Uncertainty
Analysts say the drone incident underscores the fragile security environment in the South Caucasus and the broader Middle East. With multiple geopolitical rivalries intersecting in the region, any military incident risks triggering wider confrontation.
For now, Azerbaijan says it is preparing its response while continuing to demand clarification from Iran
