Newly crowned light heavyweight champion Carlos Ulberg experienced an unusual twist of fate after his victory at UFC 327, revealing that he misplaced his championship belt during post-fight celebrations.
The 35-year-old New Zealander defeated former champion Jiří Procházka by knockout in Miami to claim the UFC light heavyweight title, but the celebration that followed reportedly ended with the physical belt going missing.
Title Win Overshadowed by Post-Fight Confusion
Ulberg secured the championship at UFC 327 after overcoming a knee injury that affected his performance throughout the bout. Despite the setback, he delivered a decisive knockout to become the division’s new champion.
However, speaking to Fox Sports Australia, Ulberg admitted that the night took an unexpected turn once the formalities were over.
“I’ve lost the belt, bro,” he said, describing how a planned quiet celebration quickly escalated into a night of drinking and festivities.
Celebration Turns Chaotic
According to Ulberg, what began as a low-key celebration quickly intensified after teammates and friends encouraged him to toast the victory.
“First, someone gives you champagne. Then one thing leads to another and you’re doing shots,” he explained, adding that he was no longer certain where the belt ended up after the celebrations.
He suggested the missing title may still be at a private residence where the team gathered after the fight, joking that one of his friends might even have kept it close overnight.
Injury Concerns Add to Uncertainty
Beyond the missing belt, Ulberg also faces a potential extended recovery period due to a knee injury sustained during the fight. Medical evaluations could sideline him for up to a year.
The injury may also affect his status as champion, with the promotion expected to consider an interim title bout during his absence.
Ulberg said he plans to travel to Las Vegas for further medical assessments before returning to New Zealand for recovery and time with his family.
Looking Ahead Despite Setback
Despite the unusual circumstances surrounding his victory celebration, Ulberg expressed confidence that the missing belt will be recovered soon.
He indicated that he is not overly concerned, suggesting it is likely misplaced somewhere among friends from the post-fight gathering.
The situation adds an unexpected footnote to what should have been a defining moment in his career, as he transitions from contender to UFC champion—albeit with a temporary mystery attached to his title.
