California attorney who tried to help overturn 2020 election loses law license

A prominent attorney who played a key role in efforts to challenge the 2020 US presidential election results has been disbarred in California, marking a major legal consequence tied to the aftermath of the vote.

The California Supreme Court ruled that John Eastman should be stripped of his law license, concluding a lengthy disciplinary process initiated by state regulators.

Court Finds Misconduct in Election Strategy

Eastman, a former legal adviser to Donald Trump, was central to a controversial legal strategy that sought to overturn the 2020 election outcome. The plan involved urging then-Vice President Mike Pence to reject certified electoral votes during the congressional certification of Joe Biden’s victory.

State bar officials argued that Eastman promoted false claims of election fraud and attempted to mislead courts, lawmakers, and the public.

“The misconduct demonstrated a clear violation of the ethical standards expected of attorneys,” said George Cardona, chief trial counsel for the State Bar of California.

Defense Plans Supreme Court Appeal

Eastman’s legal team criticized the decision, arguing that he was being punished for offering legal advice and raising constitutional questions. His attorney indicated they plan to appeal the ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court, citing concerns over free speech protections for lawyers.

Broader Legal and Political Fallout

The disbarment is part of a wider series of legal challenges faced by individuals involved in attempts to contest the 2020 election results. Eastman had previously faced scrutiny in multiple investigations and legal proceedings.

He was also linked to efforts surrounding the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol, during which Congress convened to certify the election results.

Although Eastman faced criminal charges in Georgia related to alleged election interference, that case was dismissed in late 2025. He was also among several individuals who received federal pardons tied to election-related actions, though those do not affect state-level disciplinary measures.

Career and Background

Before his involvement in election-related legal strategies, Eastman had a distinguished academic and legal career. He served as a clerk to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and later became dean of a law school in California.

However, his role in post-election efforts led to widespread criticism, including calls from hundreds of academics for disciplinary action.

A Landmark Decision

The ruling underscores the authority of state legal bodies to hold attorneys accountable for conduct deemed unethical or misleading, particularly in matters with significant public impact.

Legal experts say the decision could have lasting implications for how attorneys engage in politically sensitive cases, especially those involving election law and constitutional interpretation.
