The French government has officially barred Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir from entering France following international backlash over his treatment of pro-Palestinian activists detained during a Gaza-bound flotilla operation.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced the decision Saturday, describing Ben-Gvir’s conduct toward European detainees as “unspeakable” and unacceptable for a public official.
France Condemns Treatment of European Activists
According to French authorities, the ban was imposed after videos surfaced online showing Ben-Gvir mocking and confronting activists detained by Israeli forces after a flotilla attempting to reach Gaza was intercepted in international waters.
In one widely circulated video, the Israeli minister appeared waving a large Israeli flag over seated detainees whose hands appeared restrained. Another clip showed him shouting nationalist slogans toward a kneeling detainee while security personnel surrounded the area.
France stated that it could not tolerate French citizens being threatened, intimidated, or mistreated, particularly by a government official. Paris also urged the European Union to consider broader sanctions against the far-right Israeli politician.
Flotilla Interception Sparks Global Criticism
The flotilla reportedly consisted of around 50 boats attempting to challenge Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza. Israeli forces intercepted the vessels approximately 250 miles off the Israeli coast, detaining hundreds of activists on board.
Several detainees later accused Israeli security personnel of physical abuse, including beatings, use of tasers, and intimidation involving attack dogs. The allegations triggered condemnation from human rights advocates and multiple international officials.
The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and representatives for Ben-Gvir had not publicly responded to the French decision at the time of reporting.
Poland Also Announces Ban
France is not the first European country to act against Ben-Gvir over the controversy. Earlier this week, Poland imposed a five-year entry ban on the Israeli minister.
Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski criticized Ben-Gvir’s behavior, stating that democratic societies should not humiliate or celebrate the suffering of detainees.
The growing diplomatic backlash highlights rising tensions between Israel and several European governments over the treatment of activists and the broader humanitarian situation in Gaza.
France Criticizes Both Sides
Despite condemning Ben-Gvir’s actions, France also expressed disapproval of the flotilla mission itself. French officials argued that such actions increase diplomatic tensions and place additional pressure on consular and emergency services without producing meaningful humanitarian results.
The incident has further intensified international debate surrounding the Gaza blockade, detainee treatment, and the legality of intercepting civilian vessels in international waters.
As criticism mounts, observers say the controversy could deepen diplomatic strains between Israel and parts of Europe in the coming weeks.
