Trump Says Iran Peace Deal and Strait of Hormuz Reopening Are Near Finalization

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Saturday that negotiations involving Iran and the reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz are “largely negotiated,” signaling possible progress toward easing tensions after months of regional conflict.

Trump stated that final details of a proposed agreement are still under discussion and could be announced soon following consultations with several Middle Eastern allies and Israel.

Regional Diplomacy Intensifies

According to Trump, discussions involved leaders from Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, and Bahrain, along with separate talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump described the developing arrangement as a “memorandum of understanding pertaining to peace,” though no official agreement has yet been finalized.

There was no immediate formal response from either Iran or Israel regarding Trump’s announcement.

Strait of Hormuz Remains Central Issue

The Strait of Hormuz has become one of the most critical points in ongoing negotiations. The narrow waterway is considered one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes, carrying a large portion of global energy supplies.

Tensions escalated after Iran effectively restricted shipping activity through the strait following military clashes involving the United States and Israel earlier this year. The disruption triggered concerns over global energy markets, rising oil prices, and international shipping security.

Officials familiar with mediation efforts said the proposed framework could include reopening the Strait of Hormuz, ending restrictions on Iranian ports, and launching fresh negotiations over broader regional issues.

Pakistan Emerges as Key Mediator

Asim Munir has reportedly played a significant diplomatic role in backchannel talks between Washington and Tehran.

During recent meetings in Tehran, Munir held discussions with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif later praised Trump’s peace efforts and expressed hope that Pakistan would continue hosting future rounds of negotiations aimed at stabilizing the region.

Nuclear Dispute Still Unresolved

Despite growing optimism surrounding the talks, major disagreements reportedly remain over Iran’s nuclear program and enriched uranium stockpiles.

Iranian officials indicated that current discussions are mainly focused on ending military hostilities and easing regional tensions rather than directly resolving nuclear issues. Tehran also continues to push for sanctions relief as part of any long-term agreement.

Analysts note that previous diplomatic efforts between the U.S. and Iran have repeatedly collapsed during final stages, raising caution over expectations of a breakthrough.

Fragile Ceasefire Holds

A ceasefire between Iran, Israel, and U.S.-aligned forces has largely remained intact since early April, though tensions across the Middle East continue to remain high.

Iran has insisted that it has rebuilt portions of its military infrastructure following earlier strikes, while Israeli leaders continue expressing concern over Tehran’s missile capabilities and regional alliances.

Observers say any finalized agreement involving the Strait of Hormuz could significantly impact global oil markets, shipping routes, and broader Middle East stability.
