North Korean leader Kim observes test of rocket launch systems with his daughter

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised a live-fire test of advanced multiple rocket launch systems over the weekend, according to the country’s state media. The military drill took place amid heightened regional tensions as the United States and South Korea conduct their annual joint military exercises.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the launch test occurred Saturday along North Korea’s eastern coast. During the exercise, the military fired a series of 600mm ultra-precision rockets designed to strike targets at long distances. Kim was accompanied by his teenage daughter, widely believed to be Kim Ju Ae, who has frequently appeared with him at major state and military events in recent years.

Rocket Launch Linked to Regional Military Drills

South Korea’s military said it detected around ten ballistic missiles launched from the North’s capital region toward the sea east of the Korean Peninsula. Officials in Seoul described the launches as a provocation and stated that they violate United Nations Security Council resolutions that prohibit North Korea from conducting ballistic missile tests.

The rocket drill came as U.S. and South Korean forces carried out a joint river-crossing exercise in Yeoncheon, near the border with North Korea. The training is part of the annual Freedom Shield military exercise, which runs through March 19 and focuses on strengthening defensive coordination between the two allies.

North Korea routinely criticizes the drills, claiming they are preparations for an invasion. Washington and Seoul, however, maintain that the exercises are defensive in nature.

Kim Highlights Strategic Strike Capabilities

According to KCNA, Kim emphasized the destructive capability of the rocket systems during the drill. He said the weapons could expose enemies within a strike range of about 420 kilometers (260 miles) and demonstrate the potential power of tactical nuclear arms.

Kim warned that any opponent within range would see its military infrastructure destroyed if the system were used in combat. Analysts say the large-caliber rocket launchers blur the distinction between traditional artillery and ballistic missiles because they can generate their own thrust and are guided toward their targets.

North Korea has previously claimed that some of these launch systems are capable of delivering nuclear warheads.

Growing Attention on Kim’s Daughter

Photos released by state media showed Kim and his daughter walking alongside large military launcher vehicles and observing the test. Kim Ju Ae, believed to be around 13 years old, has appeared with her father at missile tests, military parades, and defense exhibitions since late 2022.

Her increasing presence at high-profile events has led some analysts to speculate that she may be positioned for a future leadership role, although North Korea has not confirmed any succession plans.

Rising Tensions on the Korean Peninsula

Military analysts note that North Korea frequently conducts weapons tests during the spring, particularly when the United States and South Korea hold their annual exercises. These actions often coincide with strong rhetoric from Pyongyang criticizing the drills.

The latest missile activity highlights the ongoing security tensions on the Korean Peninsula, where diplomatic engagement between North Korea and the United States has largely stalled in recent years.
