Actor Nathan Chasing Horse, known for his role in the Oscar-winning film Dances With Wolves, has been sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of multiple sexual assault charges involving Indigenous women and girls.
A Nevada court handed down the sentence on Monday, following a jury’s decision earlier this year that found the 49-year-old guilty on 13 counts, most tied to the abuse of three victims. Under the ruling, he will be eligible for parole after serving 37 years.
Victim Testimonies Highlight Lasting Trauma
During the sentencing hearing, survivors and their families addressed the court, describing the long-term emotional and psychological damage caused by the abuse. One victim, who spoke publicly, detailed how the assaults began when she was just 14 years old and said the experience permanently altered the course of her life.
Other family members expressed how the case has deeply affected their trust and spiritual beliefs, alleging that Chasing Horse manipulated cultural traditions and his role as a spiritual figure to exploit victims.
Judge Condemns Abuse of Trust
Presiding Judge Jessica Peterson criticized Chasing Horse for taking advantage of vulnerable individuals, stating that he used his influence and authority for personal gain. The court also noted his continued denial of wrongdoing despite the evidence presented during trial proceedings.
Chasing Horse briefly addressed the court, maintaining his innocence and calling the verdict unjust before being escorted out.
Years-Long Investigation and Broader Allegations
The sentencing concludes a lengthy legal process that began with his arrest in 2023. Prosecutors argued that the abuse spanned nearly two decades, during which Chasing Horse allegedly used his reputation as a spiritual leader to gain access to victims.
Authorities in both the United States and Canada launched investigations following the initial charges. Additional cases remain pending in Canada, including allegations in British Columbia and an outstanding warrant in Alberta.
Trial Focused on Pattern of Abuse
During the trial, prosecutors outlined what they described as a long-running pattern of manipulation and coercion. Testimony revealed that victims often sought guidance or healing before the alleged abuse occurred.
The defense challenged the credibility of key witnesses and sought a new trial, but those efforts were unsuccessful.
Ongoing Impact
The case has drawn attention across Indigenous communities, raising concerns about the misuse of cultural authority and the need for greater protections for vulnerable individuals.
For survivors, the sentencing represents a significant legal milestone, though many emphasized that recovery remains an ongoing process.
