Teenager dies after being thrown from horse-drawn carriage in NYC’s Central Park

An 18-year-old passenger has died after being thrown from a horse-drawn carriage that lost control and crashed in New York City’s Central Park, police confirmed.

The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon when a carriage horse suddenly bolted, sending passengers flying from the vehicle during a chaotic scene in one of the city’s most visited public spaces.

Carriage Loses Control in Busy Park Area

According to the New York Police Department, the teenager was riding with three other passengers when the horse became uncontrollable shortly before 3 p.m. At least two people were ejected from the carriage during the incident.

Emergency responders rushed the victim to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but the teenager later died from injuries sustained in the fall. The remaining passengers declined medical treatment at the scene.

Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity pending family notification.

Driver Left Carriage Before Incident

A representative of the Transport Workers Union, which represents carriage drivers, said the driver had briefly stepped away from the carriage to take a photograph of passengers at the time of the incident. Drivers are not permitted to leave their carriages unattended under park safety rules.

Union officials said the horse involved had only recently been working in the park and called for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Videos Show Chaos in Central Park

Footage captured by witnesses shows the horse sprinting through Central Park’s busy carriage loop as passengers were thrown from the moving vehicle. In a second clip, the carriage is seen overturning after colliding with another carriage.

The accident adds to growing safety concerns in one of New York City’s most heavily used public parks, which attracts millions of visitors annually.

Debate Over Horse-Drawn Carriages Intensifies

The crash has reignited debate over the future of Central Park’s horse-drawn carriage industry, which has operated for more than a century and remains a popular tourist attraction.

Supporters say the industry provides jobs for drivers and supports working farms that supply horses. Critics argue it poses risks to both animals and the public, and have long pushed for its removal from the park.

The Central Park Conservancy, which helps manage the park, has previously called for banning carriage rides, citing safety and animal welfare concerns.

Recent Incidents Raise Safety Questions

The fatal accident follows a series of recent horse-related incidents in Central Park, including the reported collapse of another horse in the days prior. These events have intensified calls for stricter regulations or a full phase-out of the carriage system.

As investigations continue, city officials and advocacy groups are expected to revisit longstanding questions about how traditional tourism practices fit into modern urban safety standards.
