A devastating explosion at a facility storing mining explosives in northeastern Myanmar has claimed the lives of more than 45 people and injured dozens more, according to local rescue teams and regional media reports.
The powerful blast occurred around midday on Sunday in Kaungtup village, located within Namhkam Township near Myanmar’s border with China. The area is controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), an ethnic armed organization that has maintained influence in the region amid Myanmar’s ongoing internal conflict.
Heavy Casualties and Widespread Damage
Rescue workers involved in recovery efforts reported that at least 46 bodies had been recovered by Sunday evening, including several children. Medical teams transported dozens of injured residents to nearby hospitals as emergency operations continued through the night.
Local responders said the explosion also caused extensive destruction to surrounding communities, damaging more than 100 homes and forcing many families from their residences.
Independent media outlets in Myanmar reported varying casualty figures, with some estimates placing the death toll above 50. Images and videos shared by local news organizations showed thick smoke rising from the blast site and widespread devastation across the village.
Mining Explosives Believed to Be Source of Blast
Preliminary investigations indicate that the explosion originated from a storage site containing large quantities of explosives used in mining and quarrying operations.
The TNLA acknowledged that gelignite, a powerful industrial explosive commonly used in mining and rock blasting, had been stored at the facility. The group stated that the materials were managed by its economic department and intended for commercial mining activities in the area.
Officials said an investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the explosion. Experts note that gelignite can become highly unstable if stored improperly or kept for extended periods under unsuitable conditions.
Authorities Provide Emergency Assistance
Following the disaster, local authorities and aid workers began providing medical treatment, temporary shelter, and relief assistance to affected residents. Search and rescue operations continued as teams assessed the full scale of the damage.
Chinese state media also confirmed that the explosion resulted in multiple deaths and injuries while causing severe destruction to residential buildings near the site.
Conflict-Torn Region Faces Another Tragedy
Namhkam Township has been under TNLA control since a major offensive launched by the Three Brotherhood Alliance and allied groups in late 2023. The alliance seized significant territory in northeastern Myanmar during its campaign against the country’s military government.
Although the TNLA reached a ceasefire agreement with Myanmar’s military after negotiations facilitated by China in 2025, tensions remain high in the region.
Myanmar has faced years of instability since the military takeover of the civilian government in February 2021. The coup triggered nationwide protests, armed resistance movements, and ongoing clashes that continue to affect large parts of the country.
The latest explosion adds another layer of hardship to communities already struggling with the consequences of prolonged conflict and political unrest.
